Christmas from the atheist side of the street.......Although I don't believe the same things that Christians believe in the religious sphere, there are many values that I hold dear that many Christians, or Jews, or Muslims, or Atheists, or anyone of any religious persuasion may share. Among them are my hopes and wishes for the members of my world-wide family during the upcoming year. Many of my wishes for all of you may seem political, but the truth of the matter is that they are not. They come from the heart and I don't care how we get there. The important thing is that we do get there.
So without any ado, here we go:
#! I wish that everyone have a healthy year in 2014. That would mean, to me, that every man, woman, and child can see a doctor, receive medications, even receive medical care that is equal no matter what the individual's socio-economic status. I wish that no person loses everything that they have because of an unexpected illness.
#2 I wish that every person in this nation have the opportunity to live their lives with the person they love, regardless of gender. Whether or not we agree with same sex marriage, the mere act of same sex couples marrying does not affect my marriage or the marriage of any other person. Your church, synagogue or mosque does not have to accept this as a matter of theology, but we should all accept this as a matter of human dignity.
#3 I wish that no child, nor any adult goes to bed at night without nutritious food in his / her belly. There is nothing as uncivilized as watching people in the 21st century starving. We have the means to end starvation. Food is not a political tool, it is a human right.
#4. I wish to see every American who wants to work, have the opportunity to work. People should be given the opportunity to provide for themselves, if they are physically and mentally able. There has to be closer cooperation between the government and private business to bring us to a full employment economy.
#5 I wish that every person who works earns a living wage. All work has dignity and should be rewarded by a wage that allows that person and those in his / her family to survive at least at sustenance levels. To determine that certain hard work is not worth a living wage demonstrates a mean spirited hubris on our part.
#6 I wish that for those few who may not be able to find work, the ability to access government backed unemployment insurance should be available. This is the last step in the wish list of #4 and #5. Work, a minimum wage and unemployment insurance is the positive wish for employment for all of us.
#7 I wish that every person feel comfortable in the practice or non-practice of their religion or non-belief system. I wish that every one in America understand that the greatness of America lies in the fact that we came here for freedom. That is both freedom to believe and freedom not to believe. Our churches, our religious institutions and our homes are sacrosanct. The rest of this nation belongs to all of us, equally.
#8 I wish that we, as a nation, can shrink our military and use that money here within our borders. That would mean we are living in a more peaceful world and we are recognizing that we are not the policemen of the world. It will allow us to meet at least one conservative mantra........it is our money, let's at least spend it here.
#9 I wish that the people in the Middle East will come to believe that they can live in peace and that they can help each other move forward in the 21st century. To bring all religions and all societies into the modern world would be a tremendous gift to the world in a time when nations threaten to move us back to the middle ages.
and #10 I wish that we all accept the Bill of Rights, both the parts we like and the parts we disagree with, and move forward as a unified nation. We are a great nation with magnificent founding documents. We have lost our way. We must find the road again. It is the road that sets us up as ONE NATION, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
