A quick thank you to the NRA executive board for doing more today to move the cause of sensible gun control forward than all the articles and pleas of the anti-gun lobbies combined. What they were thinking about has to defy the most insightful mind even if that person is a stringent NRA advocate.
For those who are not aware, the city of Tuscon had a republican city council member sponsor a turn in your gun day. The day was publicized but was totally voluntary. When the guns were turned in and there were many, the plan was to destroy the guns and get them forever off the streets. Simple, non-coercive gun control being done in Arizona, one of the states with the most liberal gun laws in the nation. No one could object, right.
Of course not. The NRA in their most outrageous stunt to date came out publicly against the gun turn in program. That would have been bad enough, but they threatened to sue the city of Tuscon if they went ahead and destroyed the guns. According to the NRA, the only appropriate outcome for the gun turn in program was to re-sell those guns to anyone who could legally buy them. There is no reason to destroy perfectly good guns.
Are these guys crazy? I know that is a rhetorical question, but this is a testimony to absurdity. Voluntary turn in of guns. Voluntary destruction of guns. Great idea for everyone except the NRA board. Even most NRA members, I think, would have no problem with this turn in.
But once again.....Thank you, NRA executive committee. I appreciate your assistance.
What do the rest of you think?
